Majority of the piano students in Singapore will normally attend the piano examinations conducted by either the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) or the Trinity College of London’s examination board. Both of them are UK music examination boards.
ABRSM and Trinity both offers graded examinations from grades 1 to 8. These exams are inclusive of both practical and theory. There are no pre-requisites required for grade 1 to 5 piano exams. However, from grade 6 to 8 piano exams, students must have already attained the grade 5 Theory of Music or Practical exams before being allowed to proceed further.
After the grade 8 piano exams, students can choose to further their level of skill by going for the diploma exams, which is also conducted by both examination boards. At the diploma level, there are 3 different awards to be attained. However, there is a minor difference in naming convention between the two examination boards.
For ABRSM, they award the following in ascending order: Diploma of ABRSM (DipABRSM), Licentiate of Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) and Fellowship of Royal Schools of Music (FRSM).
As for Trinity, they offer the following awards: Associate Trinity College of London (ATCL), Licentiate Trinity College of London (LTCL) and Fellowship of Trinity College of London (FTCL).
For each of the diploma, students can choose to specialise in either teaching or performance. At Trinity, written diplomas such as Musical Literacy and Composition, are also offered.
