Piano Grading System in Singapore

Piano grading, explained

The piano grading system in Singapore

A clear, friendly guide to how piano grades work in Singapore — the boards, the levels, and how our teachers guide students confidently from Preliminary all the way to diploma.

The two main boards

ABRSM and Trinity — what’s the difference?

Most Singapore students take graded piano exams with one of two internationally recognised boards. Both are excellent; the right choice depends on the student.

ABRSM

The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music is the most established board in Singapore. Its structured, comprehensive approach covers pieces, scales, sight-reading and aural tests, making it a favourite for building thorough, well-rounded musicianship.

Trinity College London

Trinity offers more flexibility and choice — students can weight the exam towards their strengths and pick from a wider range of supporting tests. It’s a wonderful fit for students who value creativity and options.

The levels

The grades, from first steps to diploma

Both boards run from an introductory level up to Grade 8, followed by professional diplomas. Here’s the journey at a glance.

Preliminary / Initial

The gentle first milestone — simple pieces and basic note-reading. A lovely early goal for young beginners.

Grades 1–2

Foundations take shape: hands together, simple scales, easy pieces and the first taste of exam experience.

Grades 3–5

Intermediate territory — richer repertoire, more scales, sight-reading and aural. Grade 5 is a common milestone for many students.

Grades 6–8

Advanced playing with demanding pieces, full technical work and real musical maturity. Grade 8 is a significant achievement.

Diplomas (ATCL / DipABRSM & beyond)

Post-Grade 8 professional qualifications in performance and teaching, for the most dedicated students.

No exams at all

Grades are entirely optional. Many students simply learn for the love of it — and that’s wonderful too.

What an exam involves

Inside a graded piano exam

Pieces

A selection of set pieces in contrasting styles, prepared and performed for the examiner.

Scales & arpeggios

Technical work that builds finger strength, evenness and a secure understanding of keys.

Sight-reading

Playing a short, unseen piece — a skill that makes learning new music far easier.

Aural tests

Listening exercises that sharpen the ear for rhythm, pitch and musical detail.

How we help

How our teachers prepare students for grades

1

Choose the right board & grade

Your teacher recommends the board and level that best fit the student’s strengths and goals.

2

Build steadily

Pieces, technique, sight-reading and aural are developed together, at a comfortable, confidence-building pace.

3

Rehearse with mock exams

Practice runs remove nerves and make the real exam feel familiar and manageable.

4

Perform with confidence

Students walk in prepared — and walk out proud, whatever the result.

Grading questions

Common questions about grades

Does my child have to take exams?

Not at all. Grades are a helpful goal for some students, but many happily learn just for enjoyment. It’s entirely your choice.

How long does each grade take?

Roughly a year per grade is common, but it varies with age, practice and starting point. Your teacher sets a realistic timeline.

ABRSM or Trinity — which should we choose?

Both are respected worldwide. Your teacher will recommend the better fit based on the student’s strengths and preferences.

Who pays the exam fee?

Exam fees are paid directly to the board and are separate from lesson fees. They apply only if the student chooses to sit an exam.
