It is the tradition song that is being sung every year for one’s birthday. According to the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records, “Happy Birthday” is the most recognised song in the English language. Apart from that, it has been translated to more than 18 languages worldwide!
[headline]Author[/headline]The melody came from the song, “Good Morning To All”, which was originally composed by the Hill sisters, Patty and Mildred. Patty was a kindergarten principal while Mildred was a pianist and composer. From then, the lyrics were changed to “Happy Birthday To You”. However, it is still uncertain as to who was the first person to reinvent the lyrics and changed it into a birthday song. What is known is that it was first seen in print in 1912, but could have existed even earlier. In 1935, “Happy Birthday To You” was copyrighted as a work for hire by Preston Ware Orem for the Summy Company.
[headline]Interesting Fact[/headline]It is reported that the birthday song brings in about $2 million every year in royalties. Half of the amount goes to Summy-Birchard (formerly known as Summy Company) and the other half goes to the Hill Foundation.
